How To Market Your Reverse Mortgage Business Using Podcasts Without Actually Podcasting

Podcasts are huge! I don’t know about you, but I am constantly seeing posts from friends on Facebook asking for recommendations for podcasts they should download and listen to.

The good news is that you don’t need to have a reverse mortgage podcast to take advantage of this marketing media.

You see there are already tons of podcasters out there that would love to have you on their show. In many cases they are desperately searching for content as well as fun, informative and interesting guests.

There are several benefits to being a guest on a podcast.

The first and most obvious is that you are getting your message in front of people that you may not have otherwise ever been able to get in front of.

The host of the podcast will most likely share the podcast in their social media and blogs promoting you and your reverse mortgage business even more.

You gain instant credibility with the listeners of the show. They trust the host, therefore you must be trustworthy to be a guest.

The content is evergreen. What I mean by this is that as long as the podcaster never deletes the podcast that podcast will hang around forever. You never know who may stumble across it, listen and then call you. It could be many years down the road.

You have content that you can share across all of your media platforms which includes social media, email and your blog.

You more than likely will be getting links to your site from various podcast platforms, blogs etc. which will help your website rank better in the search engines.

And finally, and most important, you are going to generate leads from people interested in reverse mortgages.

How you do you find these reverse mortgage podcasting opportunities?

  1. Online Search – Google, Yahoo, Bing which ever is your preferred choice of search engines. Simple search for “SEARCH TERM podcast YOUR CITY or YOUR STATE”. I would recommend searching for the following:

Real Estate, Finance, Financial Planning, Personal Finance, Retirement, Senior, Boomer, Housing, Bankruptcy, Estate Planning, Insurance, Care Giving

Or anything else where there may be a senior population, other potential referral partners, or adult children listening. I am sure you can add many more search ideas to that list.

  1. Listen NotesListen notes is a search engine specifically for podcasts. Think of it as Google, but only for podcasts. Again, using a variety of search terms you should find plenty of opportunities to get yourself booked on a podcast.
  2. CastboxCastbox is similar Listen Notes but in my opinion way better. It filters your searches much better thus providing better search results. I just did a quick search and found 11 real estate podcasts in my area.

Once you have found some podcasting opportunities there are a few things you want to take a look at.

Is the podcaster active? That is pretty easy to figure out just by taking a look at the last time they created a podcast. However, don’t make the assumption the podcast is dead if they have not created one in a few months. If it has been a year or more, it is likely they no longer are doing podcasts.

How do they market their podcast? Are they distributing it to other podcast hosting? Do they create Youtube videos from the podcast? Are they sharing the podcasts on social media? Do they have a website specifically for the podcasts or do they add it to their blog? The more they do, the better off you are.

Listen to a few of their podcasts. Is this someone you would want interviewing you for 30 minutes or more? Is this someone you would want to talk with for 30 minutes or more? Is this someone you want to be associated with? What’s their style?

How To Pitch Yourself and Reverse Mortgages As A Topic on a Podcast

Once you have identified podcasting opportunities you then need to some outreach and sell yourself on why you should be considered for a podcast.

It will depend on the podcaster and how much information they share. But more than likely you would be reaching out through email, Facebook or Twitter. Your outreach should be professional, informative and to the point.

Here is an example of what your out reach might look like.

Introduction

Hi PODCASTER’S NAME,

My name is YOURNAME and I would love to be a guest on your PODCAST NAME. I think I would bring tremendous value to your audience covering a topic very few people understand.

Plus I would happily promote the podcast to my audience as well.

Your Topic and Value

Reverse mortgages are highly misunderstood and when people get educated about them they often respond saying “They sound to good to be true.”

Specifically there are several topics we could cover during the podcast:

1. What is a reverse mortgage and how do they work.

2. Common myths surrounding reverse mortgages.

3. 4 most common uses for reverse mortgages and unconventional uses as well.

4. Why do people get reverse mortgages.

Your Bio

I have been in the mortgage industry for 8 years and have been specializing solely in reverse mortgage for the last 3 years. I have provided continuing education for real estate agents, financial planners, CPA’s and in-home care providers about reverse mortgages.

Where You Have Been Featured

I have a guest on XYZ Podcast, XDR Podcast, GHG Podcast and several others. I have written articles for The Tribune as well as a national reverse mortgage publication. I have been a guest on KDRZ radio and interviewed on KTLY Fox Channel 13.

(NOTE:Link to any of the resources you can so the podcast host can get an idea as to who your are, what you sound like, how you interview etc. If you have never been interviewed, been on a podcast, been on the radio, had any of your writing published. You may want to link to your blog, or Youtube channel)

Your Equipment

I have a strong internet connection and I use a Yeti Microphone.

(NOTE: You need to have some good equipment. I personally use the Yeti Microphone. But you do not need to spend $150 to get one. You can get some decent headsets on Amazon or your local computer or electronics store for about $50. You also may need a webcam.

Your Audience

I have a fairly decent sized social media audience.

Facebook Fan Page: 450 followers LinkedIn: 2159 followers Twitter: 379 followers Email List: 1350 emails of past clients and current leads

(The purpose of this is for the podcast host to get an idea on how many people the podcast could reach beyond their own listeners.)

Final Thought on Reverse Mortgage Podcasting As A Guest

Take action. Listen, not everyone is going to say yes to you being a guest on their podcast. Don’t take it personally. It is a numbers game.

Try and stick to local or regional podcasts. Unless of course you are licensed nationally. The reason for this is that you don’t want a bunch of people calling you from states you are not licensed in. It’s frustrating and time consuming.

Talk with your compliance department. You may need to read certain disclosures at the end of the podcast or even in the beginning. You know, NMLS, Equal Housing Lender, the usual stuff.
